First declared an official neighborhood in 1915, Tarrytown is one of Austin’s most charming historic areas.
In its early days, the neighborhood grew in popularity thanks in part to an alluring successful advertising slogan: “Where oak trees charm the eye.” Now more than a hundred years later, those oak trees are even more majestic, forming a gorgeous canopy of trees that provide shade in Central Texas’ long, hot summers. Tarrytown is centrally located and just a few miles from Downtown Austin. However, it has a small-town feel to it. In the heart of the neighborhood is a friendly, quaint business district that includes Tarrytown Pharmacy, which opened the day before Pearl Harbor in 1941, as well as Over the Rainbow, the oldest toy store in Austin.
Tarrytown also has plenty of parks and leisure activities to enjoy. One of the gems is six-acre Reed Park, donated in 1954 by Mrs. Fagan Dickinson. Today, the rarely-crowded greenspace includes a swimming pool, a nicely shaded hiking trail, and playground equipment for children, many of whom attend nearby Casis Elementary School.
